Saturday School: Film Culture
What is Saturday School? Saturday School is a program run by Penn State to get kids in the art classroom even on Saturdays. My final semester in State College was spent teaching a class of fifteen highschoolers all about the theme my partner, Brooks, and I came up with; Film Culture.
We taught three main lessons throughout the course.
1. Operation Black Film: large scale movie posters influenced by Film Noir made by hand as well as in Photoshop
2. Getting Into Character: shoes displaying stereotypes and the breaking of stereotypes by creating their own characters
3. TV Totem Pole: collaborative TV totem pole. The students added images and text relating to what they watched at specific ages.
From writing lesson plans, creating a curriculum, and running our very own classroom, Saturday School provided a great deal of growing as an art educator.
