Introduction

This lesson was developed for Pennsylvania State University’s Art Ed 322 class. Students in Jennifer Motter's 9th grade art class at Forrest Hill Middle School created their own stop motions for their art class from this WebQuest.
This lesson starts out with the exploration of stop motions, art with particular messages, and student blogs from around the world. The students were asked to create a stop motion in groups of four by taking pictures of found objects and then creating a movie using iMovie. The stop motion was to portray a particular message that the students decided on as a group.

Learners

This lesson is for a ninth grade middle school art class of 23 students. It involves the interaction or art and technology with the use of digital cameras and iMovie. This project could be used in higher level grades and could be used in all different subjects if small adjustments were made and the message of the project were changed to be more specific to a different subject.
Prior to the beginning of this lesson learners would have to understand how to portray a message in a work of art.

Resources Needed

Resources that are needed for this lesson are digital cameras and access to the application Windows Movie Maker as well as Internet access. Only one teacher would be needed to carry out this lesson.

Evaluation
The students will be evaluated on the clarity of their message and how it was shown in the stop motion, their creativity throughout the process, and whether or not they got their movie uploaded to YouTube with a clear description beneath.

Conclusion

This lesson is important in teaching the students how to work well together in creating a collaborative project. They will learn how to portray a clear message in a stop motion and also how to use technology such as iMovie that they may not have been familiar with before.

Process

This lesson is organized into three distinct processes. The first process involves exploring artists, animations, and blogs in order to get ideas for their own project. They also must discuss with their group and decide on what direction their collaborative stop motion will take. The second process is about setting up their objects and taking pictures as they move the objects. This is the actual creating process. The final process involves producing their movie. They must upload their photographs to iMovie and edit their stop motion. Lastly they have to upload their final movie onto the class YouTube page with a description of their message.
This lesson will take approximately ten class periods at 42 minutes each.
The students were divided into groups that were assigned by the teacher who knew which students might work well together. This lesson would be doable for a new teacher. The technology that will be used is challenging, but definitely something that the students will be able to understand.
This lesson could be varied in many ways. If the objective is changed the entire creating process could be altered. For example, instead of using found objects the students could instead use their own body movements or instead create drawin
