In second grade we worked on the idea of symmetry. We created insects based on four characteristics. The insects needed to have a head, abdomen and thorax, six legs, two antennae, and an exoskeleton. Students first fold their papers to create a line of symmetry, draw half of their insect and finish it off by painting one half and folding their paper over to create the symmetrical side. To finish our insects, students use sharpies to add symmetrical details and then add their insect to a leaf or create a background.
